The Vatican Historical Museum was founded in 1973 by the will of Paul VI, and was initially housed in the spaces under the Square Garden; and in 1987 it was transported to the main floor of the Lateran Apostolic Palace and opened in March 1991. Today the museum consists of two major sections: the Historical Museum and the Carriage Pavilion, located in the Vatican Museum, which houses the evidence concerning the papal mobility (the popemobile), ie saddles, sedans, vans, cars, all accompanied by paintings and photographs.
